The other day i went to an incredbily interesting lecture on Brigette Bardot- this woman here- and boy did it get me pissed off.
She is heralded as a beauty. No one can deny she is stunning and today she is seen by many as an icon. But she should never have the latter word used in association with her unless its being used by a racist homophobe who is being nostalgic. I myself never knew she’d been convicted four times on counts of racism and that she’s made so many homophobic slurs she is considered by many an ‘outlaw’ of France.
Yet in England we have a shop named after her.
Working yesterday (Primark at Christmas-shoot me now) I saw a woman holding a bag labelled ‘Bardot, French Fashion for less!’. I had completely forgetten in little ol’ Romford we do indeed have a shop called ‘Bardot’ and yes it is a franchise, with stores in various other locations across Southern England.
Now stop me if I’m wrong but if there were a men’s shop in France called Griffins (after Nick Griffin- head of the BNP) wouldn’t we all be a bit.. narked?
You may say “But she isn’t a leading right wing politician promoting these ideas”.. No but she’s married to a politician from the french version of the BNP- The National Front. So after four convictions of racism and her only ‘successful’ marriage being to a racist politician and we still idolise her in the western world? I’m not saying she’s Hitler but come on..?
Instead we choose to focus on her ageing and how “Oh look she’s getting a bit ugly ain’t she?”. More news articles in the UK have been published about her ageing than her personal philosophies. In my opinion this is disgusting. How can we idolise someone without knowing their views? I personally cannot look at her the same way, and although I admit she was a stunner, any admiration I may of had for her has safely been wiped. Its okay, I can just love Daisy Lowe a bit more to make up for it.
